The F word

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Sunday, June 13, 2010, In : Training

The choice of training has been narrowed down a lot by research and science. Do your workouts fast and with intensity and then you don't have to spend hours in the gym. This is a nice concept, especially with all our time constraints in our lives. Now that we are slowly but surely embracing faster, higher intensity workouts we also need to embrace the right way to approach speed training, specifically running...

Speed training for us normal gym goers are usually also called interval tra...

Be in transformation mode to reach your goals

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, In : Goal setting

New Year has come and gone and we are about halfway through February already. A big hurdle is looming. Valentine’s day, the day of love, the day where we go out with our loved ones and celebrate another day, week, month or year of togetherness and love. It is also the day that the training and diet regime flies out the window and we indulge in chocolates from morning to noon. Don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with some chocolate love, a nice bottle of wine with a fine meal and some desser...

1 + 1 = Awesome body

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Tuesday, January 26, 2010,

Do you ever feel like you want to throw in the towel out of frustration because you are training so hard, but not seeing any results? Many feel that way and we sometimes forget that the equation is just that, an equation. It is not just about training five times per week. It is not just about really pounding the treadmill in an awesome interval training or doing an intense superset type weight training workout! It is all about finishing the equation: 1 + 1 = awesome body. The first part is th...

Are you training effectively enough?

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, In : Training

Yes, you go to the gym 5 times per week. Yes, you spend a fair hour and even more in the facility. The question begs: What do you do while you are there? It is amazing how many people sit around and do nothing for minutes on end in a gym. All they do is hog a piece of equipment for far too long. Is going to gym a social affair? For some people that is a resounding yes! This is where I meet people, friends and maybe future dates. Good for them. They must not expect to see results in the abdomi...

Back down at your own risk – ways to increase your fitness in less time

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Monday, December 14, 2009, In : Training

The old story goes like this. “Too busy, no time.” No, this is not for last minute Christmas shopping or going out with friends for  a session of bonding and some drinking. This phrase will always refer to training and working out. Isn’t it just amazing that we will always put our health last? We will go and eat too much, drink too much and party way too much but we will never train too much.

In all fairness, we do have little time in this busy lives of us. We have to rearrange our sch...

What is the big hype about warming up?

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, In : November 2009

What do most of us do when we walk into any training facility? We run straight for our favorite machine and start pounding out the reps. Fantastic. The workout started with a bang and is probably going to end in a bang. One that is not going to end well for you though. Injuries in the general training public occur mostly when the fitness enthusiast do not warm up properly. The body needs to be prepared for a strenuous workout and if we fail to do so, we will never reap the benefits and reward...

Abdominal muscles, where are you?

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, In : November 2009

Well, the good news is that your abdominal muscles are where everybody else’s is. So you haven’t lost it, misplaced it or sold it for a bargain! Tell me how to find it then! This is actually very simple, but not so easy.

If you cannot see your abdominals it is because they are covered in a layer of fat. No amount of sit ups is going to help you see them either. Sit ups may increase the strength of your midsection and of course the strength of your hip flexors as well. (You use the upp...

The rise and fall of fitness trends

Posted by Lizelle Pool on Monday, November 2, 2009, In : November 2009

We started with the Jane Fonda phenomenon. All dressed up in leotard and shin warmers. It was high impact bouncy aerobics and everybody bought the video tapes. Did everybody lose the weight? Then we moved on a bit, we started running an hour a day, 7 days a week. It was the in thing. You cleared your schedule, went to work earlier, just so that you can get to gym and get your hour of cardio in. Cardio was the way to lose weight. Did everybody lose weight? Fast forward to today. This day and a...
